How we rate, and
why you can trust it.
Most lists give everybody a 4.5 and call it a day. That helps nobody. We score every spot on a strict 1-5 scale across four things that actually matter, and we're not afraid to give an icon a 3.7 if it's coasting. No pay-to-play. No favors. Just a local who eats here and keeps the receipts.
The 1-5 scale
Flawless. Best-in-class cooking and a room to match. We hand these out about as often as the Pirates see October. Plan your week around the few that hold one.
Among the very best in the city. A genuine destination. Worth crossing town and booking ahead for.
Reliably great. Go out of your way; you'll be glad you did.
Solid and worth a stop if you're in the neighborhood. Does one or two things really well.
Real strengths and real misses. We'll tell you which is which so you can order around the weak spots.
We won't waste your time or your appetite. We rarely list these at all, and when we do, it's usually to settle an argument about an overrated icon.
The four things we score
Every restaurant page shows this breakdown. The overall number is our editorial call. These four are how we got there.
Food
What's actually on the plate: technique, flavor, ingredients, the dish you came for. The heaviest factor, every time.
Vibe
The room and the feeling: design, energy, music, the kind of night it sets up. A great meal in a miserable room isn't a great meal.
Value
What you get for what you pay. A $12 plate and a $120 tasting menu are held to the same question: was it worth it? Cheap spots can out-score fancy ones here.
Service
How they treat you: warmth, timing, knowing the menu, fixing a problem without a fuss.
The fine print (the part most lists skip)
- We eat here. Scores come from real meals, not menus and press kits.
- We show our work. Every spot links to the trusted journalism we cross-checked it against: Pittsburgh Magazine, the Post-Gazette, City Paper, and more.
- No pay-to-play, ever. Nobody buys a listing, a green pin, or a better number.
- Honest spread. Our ratings run the full range. If everything were a 4.5, the number would be worthless.
- We update. Kitchens change. Chefs leave. Scores move when the food does.
Where the money comes from
This site carries sponsors, and it always tells you which is which. A sponsor slot is labelled “Presented by” and sits outside the listings.
What sponsorship cannot buy: a rating, a rank, a pin, or a place on the map. Not for any amount. The whole reason this guide is worth reading is that the numbers are honest, and a bought score would be worth exactly one payment before the guide became worthless.
