Butcher and the Rye

4.4

New American, Cocktails, Whiskey Bar · $$$ · 212 6th St, Pittsburgh, PA 15222

Pittsburgh's first bar ever nominated for a James Beard Outstanding Bar Program, and the whiskey wall, 600-plus bottles up a two-story shelf, still stops you cold. After a stint dark, it's back, and the kitchen is more than an afterthought: the dirty pasta and the rabbit-and-dumplings hold up next to anything dahntahn. Dark, clubby, and built for a serious drink.

Order: The dirty pasta with duck, off a wall of 600+ whiskeys

6

Emerson's

4.3

Cocktail Bar, New American, Small Plates · $$$ · 435 Market St, Pittsburgh, PA 15222

Tucked upstairs in the Thompson Building off Market Square, this is the dahntahn date-night room you didn't know the Burgh had. Fireplace glowing, low light, a wine list longer than your patience. The kitchen's solid, but you're really here for the drinks and the hush.

Order: Truffle fries and a fireside Old Fashioned

7

Del Frisco's Double Eagle Steakhouse

4.3

Steakhouse, Seafood · $$$$ · 455 Fifth Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15219

Big, loud, and good at what it does. The steaks land, the seafood tower is a flex, and the room hums. Pricey, but it delivers the special-occasion goods.

Order: Double eagle ribeye

8

Con Alma

The Capital Grille

Downtown's prettiest brunch. Solid more than spectacular, but the pastry case and biscuits are legit.

Order: Buttermilk biscuits & seasonal jam

11

Sally Ann's

4.1

New American, Cafe · $$ · 136 6th St, Pittsburgh, PA 15222

Richard DeShantz's veggie-forward daytime spot in the Cultural District, with patio seating on 6th Street and a menu that makes eating healthy downtown feel like a treat instead of a chore. Everything's well-seasoned and sharply executed. The smoky beets are a sleeper. A little pricey for lunch, but it never disappoints, n'at.

Order: Veggie-forward grain bowl & smoky roasted beets

13

Alta Via

4.1

Italian · $$$ · 2 PPG Pl Suite 150, Pittsburgh, PA 15222

Order: Half-pasta duo, order two favorites

14

Harry & Fritz

4.1

New American, American · $$$ · 947 Penn Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15222

Handsome room, proper martini, and a kitchen still finding its feet - plates have come out slow and heavier than they should. Worth it for the drink and the pre-theater walk; keep the expectations at the bar.

Order: A martini at the bar

See Harry & Fritz on the map →
15

Chinatown Inn

4.0

Chinese · $$ · 520 Third Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15219

The last trace of downtown's old Chinatown. Old-school Cantonese-American in a room full of history; go for the nostalgia as much as the food.

Order: Old-school Cantonese-American classics

See Chinatown Inn on the map →
16

Whisper

4.0

Wine Bar, Dessert, Cocktail Bar · $$$ · 932 Penn Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15222

The Bridges & Bourbon team built a moody little jewel box in the Cultural District where dessert is the headliner, not the afterthought. The sage olive oil cake and lemon ricotta doughnuts sing; just know the wine-by-the-glass list ran thinner than the branding promised early on. A lovely nightcap stop before the show.

Order: Lemon ricotta doughnuts with a glass of something old-world

See Whisper on the map →
17

Vallozzi's Pittsburgh

4.0

Italian · $$$ · 220 Fifth Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15222

Order: Handmade pappardelle

18

Ritual House

3.9

New American, Steak · $$$ · 524 William Penn Pl, Pittsburgh, PA 15219

Order: Dry-aged steak & raw bar

See Ritual House on the map →
19

Morton's The Steakhouse

3.8

Steakhouse, American · $$$$ · 625 Liberty Ave Suite 180, Pittsburgh, PA 15222

An old-guard steakhouse still charging old-guard prices for a room that feels tired. The steak is fine, the vibe is the weak link. Go if someone else is paying and wants a classic.

Order: Center-cut filet
