New to the map: the best recent additions

The strongest spots added to the map in the latest expansion. Some are new restaurants, some are institutions we finally got to; the score is what earns the spot on this board.

  1. 1

    Oakland · $$$ · No. 12 of 157 overall

A Forbes Five-Star chef came home and picked pizza as the hill to die on. Three-day dough, blistered and structurally serious - proof a hotel restaurant can be the whole reason you drive to Oakland.

    Order: The 72-hour dough pizza

  2. 2

    Bloomfield · $$ · No. 22 of 157 overall

The best burger in Pittsburgh and it has been for decades. Hardwood grill, butcher on site, no reinvention required. Cash flows, the bar is loud, and the char on that patty is the whole argument.

    Order: The hardwood-grilled burger

  3. 3

    Strip District · $$$ · No. 37 of 157 overall

The old No. 1 Engine House, and one of the rooms that taught this city to take cocktails seriously. Menu turns over constantly, which is either the appeal or the risk depending on your mood.

Order: Whatever the kitchen is excited about

  4. 4

    Lawrenceville · $$ · No. 45 of 157 overall

A tiny Butler Street wine bar with a name that is a joke and a list that is not. Tell them what you like and let them ignore you productively.

Order: A glass you have never heard of and a cheese plate

  5. 5

    Strip District · $ · No. 46 of 157 overall

Strip District bakery counter doing tomato pie the old way: room temperature, heavy on the sauce, no cheese to speak of. Buy more than you think you need.

Order: A square of tomato pie

  6. 6

    Sharpsburg · $$ · No. 47 of 157 overall

The hop people. Dancing Gnome makes the best IPAs in western Pennsylvania and knows it. Small taproom, serious beer, worth the drive up the river.

    Order: Lustra, every time

  7. 7

    North Side · $$$ · No. 48 of 157 overall

Everything meets the fire first, and this kitchen knows exactly when to pull it. Deutschtown's grown-up dinner - order across the wood-fired half of the menu and pass every plate around.

Order: Whatever came off the wood fire

  8. 8

    Strip District · $ · No. 50 of 157 overall

Old men arguing in Italian over tiny cups at seven in the morning. No laptops, no oat milk theatre, just the best espresso in the city served the way it should be.

    Order: Espresso, standing up

  9. 9

    Mt. Washington · $$$$ · No. 51 of 157 overall

The Grandview institution: white tablecloths, tableside flambe, and the best window in Pennsylvania. You are paying for the view and the theatre, and on an anniversary that is a fair trade.

    Order: Chateaubriand and the skyline

  10. 10

    South Side · $$ · No. 55 of 157 overall

Two hundred-odd whiskies and a kitchen that takes bar food seriously. The Scotch egg is the order, the whisky list is the reason you stay for three more.

Order: Scotch eggs and a whisky flight
